The ERGONOMIC Institute offers employers services related to analyses as required by the health and safety regulations (e.g. 90/270/EEC or related national regulations). The specialty of our Institute is close cooperation with company experts to enable them to perform further analyses with little need of support by specialists - in full agreement with the rationale of these regulations: Avoiding risks by appropriate organization of work is better than analyzing risks.
Workstation analyses (risk assessments) belong to the most important instruments both for health and safety and the efficiency experts. In general, these analyses are part of the "coherent overall prevention policy" as regulated in the Framework Directive of the EU /89/391/EEC) covering technology, organization of work, working conditions, social relationships and the influence of factors related to the working environment.
For computerized workstations, the relevant European Directive 90/270/EEC requires „Employers shall be obliged to perform an analysis of workstations in order to evaluate the safety and health conditions to which they give rise for their workers, particularly as regards possible risks to eyesight, physical problems and problems of mental stress.“
However, the EU Commission and the national laws did not specify the methodology and the overall coverage for the analyses. The reason is that some workstations may not need methodological analyses to reveal the problems associated with them, while others may desperately need thorough analyses. For this reason, the employer was given the freedom of choosing the appropriate level. << back to: Top of page
In practice, one of the results of this freedom is that more complex analyses, e.g. on mental stress, are seldom performed. On the other hand, such analyses may yield the most valuable information on the workload of the users caused by the work system and the root causes of it. We are competent in analyses of problems of most complex nature - and in findings successful solutions.
